We have had 2 Minimeis G3 (review G4) on our trip for 3 months to Africa and therefore thought to write a little about our experiences. We have also used it for hiking in Norway

Short summary:

This is a great product for anyone traveling with young children or going on a short city tour or just to and from kindergarten. It takes about 20 seconds to wrap it together. Perfect for those who are going out and traveling or for those kids who need a little relief sometimes. It is also suitable for those who do not want to bring a stroller to everyday activities. For those who want to take longer walks in the mountains and forests, we would rather recommend a traditional carrier which provides more support to the back and has storage possibilities. It is okay to use with small kids (up to 2 years) for longer trips as well, but if this is the main use I would buy a traditional carrier.

Benefits:

  • Easy to bring
  • Children love it and have great view
  • Easy to remove and attach children on your own
  • Perfect for city tours
  • Fits under the stroller when not in use
  • You get free hands since the child is strapped

Conserns:

  • Best for young children (15-20 minutes with our 4 year old is enough for Dad)
  • High center of gravity, becomes a little difficult to keep balance in demanding terrain
  • The height makes it possible to crash with the child in branches, door frames etc.
  • Lack of storage makes ordinary carriers more relevant for longer walks in the countryside.

Our experiences:

We have had great pleasure from our two Minimeis for our children of almost 2 and just 4. We have lived 3 months in Africa and mostly had a place of residence in Tanzania.

We have had good use of bringing a Minimeis on shorter walks in the immediate area when big sister has been able to walk herself and little sister has walked a bit and needed some carrying when she gets tired. Without the Minimeis it is almost impossible for Dad to be helpful when she is tired, but when the Minimeis is included she says “meis” as one of her newest words when she starts to get tired. She enjoy the views and gets jumpy when she gets on her shoulders. After the first few minutes with a riding girl, she becomes calm and sits and watches all the exciting things we go by.

It’s a good way to wear and a lot easier than carrying on your shoulders without the Minimeis. Since she’s tied around her body, her backrest and legs are also attached her arms are free to carry and when she sees an exciting stork, chicken or a lady wearing avocado on her head I don’t need to be afraid of her falling down. It is attached under the arms of the wearer with practical loose and tight straps in addition to a clip in the middle of the chest. Although I have so little flexibility that there are few carriers I can manage to wear without help and it is sometimes difficult to put on a jacket, I manage to get on this completely on my own and lift the child up and fasten it myself. It is done in a few seconds from it is folded in the stroller or sometimes I only hold it in my hand if the trip is shorter than we need to bring diapers.

We have had a few longer trips on two longer trips, but then we have been more than two adults on the trip. It is demanding to combine with carrying a backpack, so if you need a lot of luggage it is an advantage if it is one more adult than kids that have to be carried. On one trip to the Kilasia waterfall we had to cross a river with strong currents and about 1 meter depth before we had to climb some cliffs. It was demanding to keep the balance with such a high center of gravity, but the children crossed the river without getting wet and found it very exciting. This was a steep ride and it went very well to carry the smallest all the way.

On the next trip which was a little further to Materuni Waterfall, the terrain was easier, but the trip longer. Now, big sister had to be worn and after 15 minutes it started to hurt in a shoulder. On the way home, I made sure to pick her up and down sometimes so that the carrying time was shorter at a time. This worked better and will probably be the solution when we climb Table Mountain in South Africa later this summer

We can strongly recommend Minimeis to those who need a carrier that is easy to carry and should not go long trips with big children.

PS! We have been sponsored with our two Minimeis for this trip, but with no obligation to write or promote it in any way. We just happen to live close to the inventor so he gave them to us personally.
