Minimeis G4 review

We opened the wrapping and found what we have been missing the most with Minimeis until now, the backpack. We got a bit anxious, didn’t we order more? We opened it, and there it was.

About 2 years ago we saw Minimeis for the first time in use. We googled it and found out that the inventor lives a few hundred meters away from us. We made contact and told him about our blog and our plans for the next summer. He gave us 2 pieces of Minimeis G3 (read the review here) we brought with us for 3 months in Africa. He also told us it’s coming a new improved Minimeis G4 soon, but it was not ready before we departed.

We loved the G3 and it helped us expanding our possibilities during our African adventure. If we were asked if Minimeis G3 is the best carrier for your child we would say “it depends on your needs”. If you ask me after using Minimeis G4 I would say “with very few exceptions”. We have experience from using Osprey Poco Child Carrier (also a great carrier), but haven’t used it once after getting Minimeis.

What is a Minimeis?

It is the perfect way to carry your child. You keep your child happy, your hands free and it is easy to bring along. It fits under the stroller, in a backpack or can be carried by the shoulder strap. One of the first words by our (at that time) 1 year old was “meis” (coming from Norway we use this word for child carrier). We travelled in Africa for 3 months and this was a perfect place to watch out for everything exciting.

Why shoul I buy a Minimeis?

The size: It is small and foldable and easy to carry along

The view: The child loves to have the best view.

Value: I would say the price is mid-range as a child carrier, but the product is superb.

Easy to use: It’s easy to put on, easy to insert the child, easy to strap and adjust. Even easy to get content from the backpack when carrier is in use.

Design: It looks cool and comes in 5 different colours. Bright colours for the bold ones and more neutral colours if you don’t want so much attention (you will get some anyway because of the cool product and your cute kids).

The shoes: The fresh addition to the Minimeis products is the shoes made together with Gaitline (another Oslo-based product). We haven’t tried the adult shoes, and our kids like all shoes. They look amazing and after reading about the shoes and the inventor we are confident they are of high quality.

When to buy something else instead?

If you use to walk in places with many low branches. Because your child is above you it might get scratches or hit something above you if you don’t pay attention (thick forest or when climbing shaded stairways to temples in Asia is only places we have experienced this) If your child is still sleeping during daytime it is not possible to set down the carrier with the child inside. So if my main use is walking long hikes with a sleeping child I would prefer another carrier able to stand on the ground with a sleeping child inside.

What is new with Minimeis G4?

A new way of balancing the weight that makes is as good as a carrier on the back. We have hiked both for more than 10km (6 miles) and steep mountain hikes carried a 3 year old all the way. With G3 this was painful to my shoulders, but not with G4.

The backpack is new. This is what makes this the only child carrier you ever need. You van keep the carrier and it’s still room for some food and drinks. Without the carrier inside it should be possible to fit everything you need for a day out. The most amazing thing is how easy it is to get access to the backpack even with a child on your shoulders. You just open one of the attachments and it swings around to the front. You’ll get access to your water bottle in a few seconds.

A few minor changes have happened from G3 to G4. It comes with a tiny mirror to see your child. The way of strapping it in folded position have changed. I personally preferred the G3 way, but both are good.
